When Should I Get Baptized?

Q: When should I get baptized?

A: Nowadays, many churches conduct baptism after studying for 6-12 months or after taking several classes. However, when we look in the Bible Jesus and His disciples taught that those seeking salvation should be baptized immediately.

After the Reformation, Christians emphasized faith and baptism was simply considered a sign of repentance. But, for a sinner there is nothing more important than the forgiveness of sins. Baptism is an urgent ceremony that cannot be delayed. The Bible consistently shows that baptism was never postponed for those who believed. Let’s look at several verses that confirm baptism should be carried out without delay.

“As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, ‘Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?’”

“On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message. When she and the members of her household were baptized ...”

“The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. He then brought them out and asked, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ They replied, ‘Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.’ Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized.”

“‘Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.’”

“Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’”

“And this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.”

Many people wonder, “When should I get baptized?” According to the Bible, we should be baptized as soon as we believe. Baptism is not a ceremony to postpone or treat lightly—it is the moment when our sins are washed away and we begin a new life in Christ. Delaying baptism means delaying salvation, and nothing is more urgent than receiving God’s promise of forgiveness. If you have come to faith, now is the time to act.
